Caktus has grown sharp web and SMS applications for business, higher education, and social good since 2007. Our award-winning, Agile teams focus on developing for impact and scalability. We specialize in custom Django apps, but also offer discovery workshops, best practices consulting (project management, QA, Agile), and team augmentation. As a full-service shop, Caktus commits to maintaining each project with managed hosting and ongoing Django upgrades. Past and current clients include Mozilla, UChicago, PBS, Discovery Communications and others in media, travel, education, finance, and health research.


Caktus is looking for a motivated Account Manager to join our growing sales team in evaluating leads and directing the sales process. The employee would serve as the initial point of contact for incoming sale opportunities and be an integral member of the project team from requirements gathering, proposal writing, and implementation to delivery of completed project. The position also requires that the candidate be knowledgeable about custom web application best practices in order to accurately convey the value proposition of Caktus and the technology we use. This is an on-site position in our Durham, NC office and relocation assistance is available.


Within 30 days, gain an in-depth understanding of Caktus’ sales process and qualify potential leads.

  • Learn about Caktus’ qualification and estimation processes, deliverables, and payment structures
  • Understand Caktus' unique value proposition and communicate that effectively to clients
  • Sit in on sales calls and applicable project meetings


Within 60 days, lead the sales process with new customers and help define project requirements.

  • Present sale proposals to viable business leads
  • Qualify incoming leads for viability based on project requirements, relevance to Caktus’ experience and budgetary expectations
  • Work closely with the project management team to determine requirements from client provided spec documentation
  • Write and take ownership of proposals to prospective clients
  • Act as a liaison to ensure that project scopes are accurate during the sales process between clients and developers
  • Gather requirements from clients and structure tasks that follow an Agile development methodology
  • Coordinate the estimation process with the project management and development team to create accurate project estimates


Within 6 months, provide insight into improving the sales process and assist with sales and marketing across the company.

  • Provide feedback on sales collateral and assist marketing with appropriate content creation related to the materials
  • Collaborate with the sales and marketing team to refine and provide feedback on the sales process
  • Manage the lifecycle of a project from the initial sales call to delivery of the completed project
  • Ensure that project requirements are optimized to include up-to-date technology that allows for reasonable upgrades during the lifecycle of the application
  • Assist with writing compelling proposals and presentations for new business leads
  • Provide compelling information to potential leads about Django
  • Represent Caktus at conferences and business development meetups


After a year as an Account Manager at Caktus, provide substantial growth to Caktus’ market share and improve our sales process

  • Sell $688k in aggregate deal value
  • See 3 projects through their complete lifecycle at Caktus
  • Improve and refine the presentation and proposal process
  • Implement improvements to the estimation process
  • Evaluate and suggestion different sale methodologies to improve Caktus’ sales strategies and goals



  • At least 2 years of business development experience.
  • In-depth understanding of the intricacies of custom web development.
  • Enthusiastic dedication to Caktus' core values and culture and genuine interest in inspiring and supporting customers to use Caktus services.
  • Ability to make job-related decisions quickly, with available information, that align both with team and company goals.
  • Natural relationship building and social skills, with the ability to represent the organization passionately to potential clients, as well as listen and respond to prospective customers' true needs.
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA or other advanced degree is a plus.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time.


Caktus uses a standardized and equitable method to calculate salaries. Salaries are predetermined by a formula, which incorporates market rates, cost of living, candidate experience, and years with the company. They are standardized team-wide and are non-negotiable, in order to ensure the equitable nature of the salary. The formula applies to all team members at Caktus. For this position, your starting base salary would be $63,840 plus commission.
